Data Prep 3: Joining Data Tables

This case is designed for accounting students. This case is independent of the other two case and can be used prior to or after the other cases. While the case includes minor data cleansing the essence of this case is the joining of data streams by using primary and foreign keys. In the fourth stream, each record must be transformed into multiple records and a primary key must be created before it can be joined. These operations transform the data into a flat data set in which all the data for a specific product sold to a specific customer is on one row. The Contribution Margin in dollars for each Salesperson by Region can then be calculated. Two reports must be generated: contribution margin by salesperson, and contribution margin by product and region. Based on these reports, students must answer 10 analytic questions. The numbers are unique to each student. As a result, the correct answers to the analytic questions will be different and unique for every student. The case can be solved using Alteryx, Power BI or Tableau and a free mini tutorial and data set is available.

The book comes with a quizzing system, with each student being presented with a timed quiz comprising five questions selected at random from the database of quiz questions for the chapter. Instructors can assign these quizzes in advance of the topics to be covered in class, giving students an incentive to read the chapter in advance of the class. Students read the chapters and take the online quizzes prior to class.

Each chapter features hyperlinks to related information, taking advantage of the online nature of the book. Additionally, the chapters featuring Microsoft Access databases permit the databases to be downloaded by students for further exploration.
